London's Newest Club: Check Out XoyoWritten by Manu Ekanayake Tuesday, 24 August 2010 18:00 News - After so many club closures (and a ‘too close for comfort’ turnout from Fabric) it’s nice to report that a new club is opening in East London. Xoyo opens on Wednedsay 15th September at 32-37 Cowper Street in Shoreditch. Curious? We are... So it’s got the good location (in London these days, it’s gotta be East if you’re talking proper clubs – Cable being one of the few exceptions), but for a club to last, it needs the right people behind it. And Xoyo’s certainly got that, with a crew of promoters who straddle the many divides of London’s clubland effortlessly. First off there’s the true-school house heads, repped by Cymon Eckel, one of the chaps behind Boys Own (he’s an old mate of Andrew Weatherall and Terry Farley, whom you never hear about as he’s a venue guy, not a DJ – these days running East London boozers The Griffin and The Britannia); Marcus Weedon of the indie-electronic festival Field Day and the Underage Festival (who ran the Soho joint Riki Tik in the 90s with Cymon, plus the indie-led Vapour nights); Tom Baker from Eat Your Own Ears (EYOE), the leftfield live music specialists who gave us Florence & The Machine and finally Johnno Burgess, co-creator of Bugged Out, as well as seminal music magazine Jockey Slut. ‘I am really excited about hosting Eat Your Own Ears gigs at XOYO,’ admits EYOE’s Tom Baker, adding, ’London has been crying out for a new multi-room venue. I think the space is perfectly located and also has great advantages for programming a live music or club event simultaneously.’ Xoyo will host everything from gigs to full-on club nights in its 800-capacity space. The main room lives in the basement (complete with D& B soundsystem), while the ground floor is as big, with an outdoor smoking terrace. Here’s some of the first events: • Thurs Sept 16th Upset The Rhythm presents Dan Deacon, Sewn Leather, DJ Dog Dick. £10 adv. 8pm
