Interview -
George Evelyn (aka Nightmares on Wax) discusses his methods for compiling chart topping compilations and what’s in store for the Wax Da Beach album launch party with Daddy G…
Nightmares on Wax release Wax Da Beach this month – a 2 disc compilation that captures the vibe going down at the Wax Da Beach parties in Ibiza. NOW's George Evelyn explains...
How would you describe the sound and vibe captured on the new Wax Da Beach compilation? For me it’s about giving that sunshine vibe through feel good music. There are 28 tracks on the two disc album.
How do you choose such a finite number of tracks for inclusion over the hundreds of possibilities out there? It all starts with picking as many tracks as possible and seeing what we can get cleared in a short space of time really, then out of that delightful selection it’s up to me to get the mix and journey right. So most of it is unknown as far as the order of the mix is concerned.
Is there a secret formula to creating a successful, original sounding stand-out compilation? It’s about selection; you have to be a great selector, which is the art of djing or compiling. I grew up listening to selectors on sound systems, no tricks, just knowing what to select.
It sounds near on impossible to capture a 20 year musical journey in one single compilation, yet you do it. How? I don’t know if I agree on the 20yr part of this question, as some of the tunes are older and some are more modern. So what is captured here is our general vibe of Wax Da Beach and what we play.
Will you showcase tracks from the album at the launch party on 6th August at Sands, Ibiza with Massive Attack's Daddy G? Yes, for sure! These tracks are taken from what we select at Wax Da Beach, so Da Beach selection came before the compilation.
From your library of compilation creations, do you have a personal favourite? Do you ever listen to them at home? So hard to choose favourites for me when it comes to my music collection, and I do listen to all the music I possess at home.
What’s the reason you continually move the Wax Da Beach parties around venues in Ibiza? Well it’s about growing organically and keeping things fresh. I’m always looking to change or spread what we do as the challenge is what keeps things fresh.
When you set up Wax on Records, did you realise the longevity and diversity of the ‘Wax On’ brand i.e.. Wax Da Beach, Wax Da Jam etc? My whole purpose of setting up Wax On Records was to create opportunity for others, in sync with that the events have been born and have almost created a greater platform for me and the Wax Da crew to spread our music and talents further a field.
Your early sounds as DJ EASE were inspired by hip hop and b-boy break crews. Can you actually break dance? Please send us a link of you in action on YouTube! I was a break dancer and part of the whole B-boy movement like 25yrs ago before YouTube existed or having the money or even knowing someone that had a video camera way back then...
Do you miss your hometown Leeds and if you could take any one element of the city to Ibiza, what would it be? I wouldn’t say I missed Leeds, I have been very blessed to have grown up there, and my upbringing has gifted me in my music. As for the quality element I would take from Leeds, it would be its humour and raw energy - I love it for that!
