Hawtin Explores New Dimensions

No, Richie's not off on one again – but his artist brother (and longtime collaborator) Matthew Hawtin is bringing his new exhibit to East London’s Red Gallery this February.

The Dimensions show (which runs from Friday 3rd to Sunday 26th February) is set to explore the story of Richie Hawtin’s Plus 8 and Minus Records labels, via the artwork that his brother Matthew created for them.

As the Hawtin brothers (who started going clubbing together as Canadian teens in the 80s, when house and techno exploded ‘across the river ’ in Detroit) have grown into one of techno’s biggest names and a storied artist, respectively, the development of their artforms show distinct similarities: Richie’s 1993 Dimension Intrusion album (as F.U.S.E) used artwork from Matthew’s project from the same year, both being rooted in minimalism; which would become increasingly important to both the brothers. The same goes for technology, with Richie famously embracing digital music production and Matthew’s work going from painting canvas to using ever more refined artistic techniques.

And for those who see the clubby images and feel like dancing, Dimensions will also include a more musical event, as on Thursday 23rd February Minus mainstay Gaiser hosts his VOID show for a lucky 300 clubbers, alongside Charlotte Michelle 11th (Red Gallery’s resident DJ) and Claus Voightmann of respected East London house night Toi Toi.
