The Ghostly imprint is offering a collector's item in support of Matthew Dear's upcoming album: the item will give you online access to "Black City", we are leaving any further practical use of this thing up to you... we simply don't see any.
Ghostly describes this special item in a very M-Nus-style piece of blah-blah: It is "an abstract key to an unknown door". Yes. Or how about the claim that it is "both a sculptural representation of the themes explored in Black City and a symbolic conduit to the music itself". In normal human language this means it's a black obelisk, or totem, or whatever you like to call it, in the form of a skyscraper. On it you'll find the inscribed letters MDBC (Matthew Dear Black City) and a unique alphanumeric key which allows you to access a private page on Matthew Dear's website. On it you'll be able to stream and download the Black City album. The totem is designed by Constantin and Laurenee Boym of NY based Boym Partners outfit, for those interested...
The totem goes at an astonishing $ 125 and can be purchased exclusively through the Ghostly Store. Well, what can we say? We are normally a bit skeptical towards such marketing actions... but this shit really made us soil ourselves.
