BnB traveled to the globe's epicentre of all things dance -Berlin- for the closing party of the Fly BerMuDa event. Here's the full story on the madness brought by Paul Kalkbrenner, Sven Vath, Booka Shade, and many others...

Berlin. The epicentre of all that’s hip, innovating, and extraordinaire when it comes to electronic music at its pinnacle. Apart from the numerous events this city holds on a weekly basis in clubs such as Berghain, Tresor, Watergate, and Club der Visionaire, Berlin also hosts the very exciting four-day Fly BerMuDa (Berlin Music Days) event at which today’s tastemakers show their skills across the city’s finest clubs and venues.

The closing event of the 2010 edition (on Saturday November 6th) takes place in one of the most remarkable sites in the city: Flughafen Tempelhof, a former airbase turned party location with two halls hosting the likes of Richie Hawtin, Sven Vath, Loco Dice, Booka Shade and many others big names in contemporary house and techno. Electronic music from 8 pm to 11 am, now’s that’s some shit. Here’s the full story.

After arriving on Fridays and having enjoyed the many impressive cultural places Berlin hosts, we prepared ourselves for a full blown house and techno experience we heard so much about. Upon entering the location, we immediately noticed the raw, somewhat industrial vibe that seems to haunt the Flughafen at night. Needless to say this got us into the mood, a feeling that was enhanced upon witnessing the first act: The Koletzkis. Consisting of renowned DJ Oliver Koletzki and his entourage, the band’s electro-pop-with-a-twist-of-indie sound proved to be a great opener for the night.  But it was Booka Shade who opened the night in a more than spectacular way. The outfit’s two members, hidden behind an impressive array of gear, literally shook the place with their hands-in-the-air electronic sound. Live as live can be, Booka Shade fully released the one massive hit after the other, turning the entire room into a fucking madhouse for the full length of the gig. Sweat came dripping from the ceiling, synths roared like there was no tomorrow, and the vibe was incredible at all times: Berlin clubbing at its very best.

A few walks across the site later we went to see Watergate resident Sebo K and although I’m generally not a big fan of the man’s productions, I must admit that his gig was floor-rocking to the bone. Pumping house is what we got, and judging by the crowd’s reaction I was definitely not the only one who enjoyed it. Very, very impressive. Following up in the second room was Cocoon’s main man Sven Vath, who did his thing as he always does: crazed, sweaty, full on rocking house music. Up next was Paul Kalkbrenner, one of the main reasons we visited this festival, who turned the place into a soaked flock of ravers from the very first tones of his gig. A bit progressive, a bit minimal, a bit poppy here and there, but very enjoyable and technically flawless. In other words, superb. Any words on Hawtin? Nope, sorry. We didn’t have the energy to go and see the man’s performance. Don’t get me wrong, the event was great but we decided to head back to the hotel for a good night’s rest. We’re getting old.

Now, how about the ‘general facilities’? Well, they were alright. The organization still has a lot to learn in terms of logistics and set-up, but I consider this more of a underground twist to the event as a whole. The toilets often saw huge queues, especially at the ladies’, but the bars were easy to reach and it didn’t take more than a few minutes to get your refreshments. The decoration was minimal but effective although Pfadfinderei did a great job at VJ’ing, but the location itself made up a lot for this all. Food was also to be found in abundance, although the look of the hamburgers available did not really enhance my appetite to be honest. Still, it was there if you wanted it, so thumbs up for that too.

All in all, Fly BerMuDa at Flughafen Tempelhof was a night to remember. Berlin’s hedonistic persona and penchant for all-day-all-night clubbing was once again emphasized. And its vibe not only attracts locals, oh no. Countless nationalities celebrated the finest in electronic music at this event, something that definitely contributed to the international allure of Berlin as the planet’s clubbing capital. If you haven’t visited the city yet, I urge you to do so at your soonest convenience to experience dance music at the pinnacle of adventure yourself.

Pics soon to follow.
