BnB's Andrea Steyn talks to Australian Hard House DJ XDream about her new mix CD Central Energy 2011, tunes that changed her life, and Aussi events we're not to miss...
Introducing DJ XDream to BnB, who has placed her mark all over the globe in hard trance and dance music. This Australian starlet is no secret to fans of South Africa and in her home country Australia. BnB’s South African reporter Andrea Steyn took the time to speak to the very capable lady behind the decks who recently played at Defqon Australia on the Orange/International stage, as well as in South Africa this year.
She is multi-talented and even performs her own vocals on her new release, where she mixed one of three discs on the new album release ‘Central Energy 2011’. The album is three massive discs of hard trance, hard dance and hard-style, with mixes by Alex Kidd, Anne Savage, and XDream. Including artists like Luca Antolini, Shock:force, Bioweapon, Pitcher, Showtek, Brennan Heart, Blutonium Boy, any hard dance lover should not miss out.
So, how would you describe the sound of your new CD mix Central Energy 2011? It is beautiful uplifting hard trance into twisted, sexy, powerful hard dance / hard-style. The sound of my CD really represents me. It starts with my own vocals and beautiful uplifting hard trance, and then gets harder and faster! Showcasing the styles I love to play and love to dance to. I use my own vocals throughout and scratch, sample and use acapella's exactly like I do playing a live set. I love creating and doing as much as I can with the time given.
What inspired you to create the production? I was actually asked by Universal Music, which was just a complete dream come true. I've bought vinyl’s and CD's from 'Central Energy' for years. So it was a complete privilege to be asked to represent Australia on Central Energy 2011.
How long has it taken to get it all together? It took me a few weeks to go through all the tracks and choose what represented me and have a mix and also make up some vocals. Then Universal Music dealt with the licensing and manufacturing etc.
Can u remember the first time you played one of the tracks, how did the crowd respond? The first CD launch was in Melbourne with Alex Kidd who was total chaos! It was an absolute wild album launch! Every second was so amazing and when I dropped my track 'To Myself' the crowd went wild! It was so thrilling, one of the best times ever. An absolute dream came true! Ok, tell us about your life changing band or song, that when you listened to the music of the band or song, your life was never the same? DJ Archie from 2001 in Canberra. It was the first time I had heard hard trance, and first time I had really seen the club scene. It inspired me and changed my life. Also, Australian DJ's Bexta, Nik fish and Yoshi had a major impact on my life. Without their CD's and me dancing to their sets, I would have never found my exact style.
What does your mum/dad think of your talent? My mum and dad are so proud of me for following my dreams and making the move to Sydney on my own when I was 20. It was a tough move leaving everyone, but a move I’m so happy and proud of :)
What’s happening this summer in Australia? What are the events not to be missed?*Stereosonic.. Nov 26th A massive festival at the Sydney Olympic park which has a lot of different arenas and different styles of music. Definitely the best festival for trance, electro, house and dub-step.
*Frantic boat parties!! That is cruising the Sydney harbour with the best of U.K. hard dance and hard trance guys. Nov 26th and another in Feb/March
*Bass control: December 10th. Guaranteed to be the best of hard dance, hard trance and hard-style at the Sydney show grounds- Sydney Olympic Park.
*Masif New Years eve: @ Space Sydney. Two massive rooms of Sydney’s best hard dance DJs
*A New Years Day Dream: A boat party cruising the beautiful Sydney harbour all day, sigh. Two rooms of hard trance, hard dance and a chill-out zone on the top deck with funky house. The best way to bring in the new year!
