The Pubahs started back in 1998 and have been bringing a touch of funk to the scene ever since, yet in a way most producers would shy away from us due to it being er... too unorthodox? Or incomprehensive, perhaps? Well, that's exactly the stuff we love: It's underground, it's incredibly vivid yet in a freaky kinda way, it oozes with hilarious references to life itself, and it spanks your speakers like a crazed pimp on a five-dollar ho. And although we've come to know the duo as a (Detroit-) techno outfit over the years, their upcoming album Madd Circus has become a reflection of the duo's electropoppy side. The result? Read our review to find out!
The first single of the album NUmb, Deaf & DUmb is already out there and the accompanying video includes the usual tongue in cheek lyrics from Paris the Black FU. The album itself will be released September 27th on their own label DET.ELE.FUNK. In the meanwhile you can check out our review!
We went for a chat with the guys for some first hand info on 11 years of sheer insanity, their future projects and much more!
Heya guys, how are you? Great man thanks, and you?
End this month sees the release of your new LP Madd Circus. In your own words, how would you describe the album? This album is more about returning to our roots in a way. We really missed the feel and atmosphere of the first and thought it be a good idea not to think so much about what's happening now but to take what we're about and extend on that.
How did it come together? It came together like butt cheeks in prison, TIGHT!
Any studio magic you would like to share? Yeah we just had a good time as usual and tried to do what felt right. We also took a bit more time in learning the processing process, mixing process and the process of processing what we had already processed without over processing it.
In terms of titles, it seems as if there is a link between this album and your 1999 debut EP Mad Circus, could you explain? Well, I really loved those days of being experimental and not being concerned of what people would think while wondering what the reactions would be. Madd Circus to me is a return to that mentality.
The album is a less techno orientated than your last album Nuttin' but Funk, instead reflecting a more electro based sound. Why this change? I still have a lot to learn as far as producing techno goes I would love to produce more but I think I need a bit more time as far as finding a definite sound. Besides Detroit Grand Pubahs is more of an electro funk band than techno.
The Detroit Grand Pubahs are going strong for 11 years now, how do you look back on those years? Looking back on the years I look at them with sarcasm. I find that you have to have a bit of sarcasm or you take things too seriously. My past is filled with the joy and pain of life and my career is no different. But I am extremely happy that it happened and I am able to have a sense of humor about it.
What do you feel are the biggest changes and what sparked them? The biggest changes are the sound and the production. I wasn't very happy with the sound of a lot of my releases and wanted to change that, I wanted to learn more about how to process it and make it less muddy but bigger. So, bought what was necessary i.e. books, videos & HARDWARE!
and what keeps you going? Learning my art and trying to get better at it. I love gear and doing research to learn what it does like learning the differences between a solid state and tube compressor and what they be good to use on. Things like this make my job more interesting and when I learn and succeed using them to make my sound better it makes it all worthwhile.
What's in the Pubahs pipeline for the near future? A tour, more music videos to put up on the website and hopefully more music.
What can we expect from your DET.ELE.FUNK in coming months? We intend to put out more music from the PuBahs and other artists, plus we've already made a sub label called Det.Ele.DUb to be able to put out more that just techno or electro.
To conclude, is there anything you'd like to share with our audience that we haven't covered yet? Support the artists you like or love by not file sharing, don't use cracked plugins, use Black FU Condom-Mints, Mr. O is a great butcher, count your blessings and if you need relationship advise ask Dr. Bootygrabber.
