Paco Osuna with Barem @ Cielo Club, NYC

imageEvent Review

Cielo Club, in the heart of the chic and trendy meatpacking district, usually hosts a haven for the hipsters, with tables, bottles, and enough models to make the Ford Agency look like a sham. Home to Francois K's weekly Deep Space party, the air is usually overflowing with melodic house and delicious dubs of all sorts, including disco, reggae, and drum and bass being regulars on the tasting menu.

Very rarely does a venue like Cielo bring in a Minus newcomer like Barem or a Spanish techno veteran like Paco Osuna to pound their rhythmic, minimal, percussive beats that prove to be dangerously splendid in a diffused room with blinking walls.

Paco is always victorious in playing tracks that the average partygoer, and DJ for that matter, doesn't have in their play list. He constantly drives hard but never loses control, he is consistent and knows how to work a room, not to mention he's a really cool dude. It was no surprise that the Amnesia Ibiza resident reigned supreme once again, and made people toil their dancing shoes until the wee hours of the morning.

The more shocking act of the night however, was the opener Barem, who is a naturally flawless mixer thanks to a superior ear for beat matching and a blessed child of the digital epoch. He is a complimentary new addition to the Minus name and we expect only bigger and better things to come. Is it a bit excessive or just plain unfair to hold this Argentine newbie to such high expectations? With Richie Hawtin as a label boss, we think not!

Overall, Cielo should host more techno DJ's, the sound system is banging and the LED walls are certainly something to brag about. Although the techno kids might not be as pretty as the typical commercial house model mob, they are bonded by the music and life is more beautiful.
