Oscar Mulero – Grey Fades to Green Album TourWritten by Marijn van Laerhoven
Last weekend BnB went to visit Utrecht's Club Poema for what promised to be a great techno night. In a long going series of Mental Evolution nights many great jocks and live acts have already come by. Robert Hood, The Advent, James Ruskin, Surgeon and Counterpart, just to name a few. Tonight's main man one of our all-time personal favorites, all the way from Spain; Oscar Mulero. Also spinning tonight, Dutch techno hero Remy and Mental Evolution host Paul Boex. Tonight's edition of Mental Evolution was titled 'Oscar Mulero - Grey Fades to Green Album Tour', a calling for all Dutch Oscar Mulero fans to head out for Utrecht. It had been a good while since we last made the journey to Utrecht's fine club, but it sure sounded like a great plan to return. The Funktion-One in-your-face sound system, the friendly crew and the warm atmosphere sure do count for something. Add some serious pounding techno grooves to that and you just know you'll be having a great night out. When we arrived at Club Poema Paul Boex was enjoying his spin behind the decks for a two hour warmup session. Tonight's host threw around plenty of neat beats, but not much people. Most people were only just getting in having their ID's checked at the door, stuffing their winter jackets in their lockers, getting a drink poured at one of the bars and toasting towards one's birthday party.
Around one 'o clock it had become more crowded and Oscar Mulero had joined the booth. Holland and Spain, lining up yet once again. Oscar Mulero has a reputation for this so-called biker-techno. Lot's of, but not exclusively, raw stuff with unusual rhythm patterns, also known as off-beat. Not your typical main stream sound, but the man's a hero amongst the right audience. Tonight that audience was certainly there. We've seen Mulero play at massive festivals, indoor raves but also at much smaller club nights, never to be disappointed. In the three hours set time he had tonight, Mulero played both good 'old and fresh records from his new album. Oscar Mulero did seem to have updated his sound somewhat with less of the off-beat stuff. The laptop easily gave away the fact that even Oscar Mulero did move on to a digital setup, but we still dig his sound. In fact we have to admit, Holland got hit in the face by Spain, again... but this time in a good way. In the remainder of the night Dutch techno hero Remy took lead from behind the booth and gave the night a fitting ending. Tonight was a proper techno night with Paul Boex, Oscar Mulero and Remy; the Club Poema crew and and a whole bunch of techno fanatics. Do keep an eye out for future Mental Evolution nights as there's always more techno in store for us.
