Marco Carola @ Blkmarket 4 Year Anniversary PartyWritten by Mandy Harris Event ReviewWhat would you like for breakfast? A bagel? A muffin? How about a nice hot cup of Marco Carola? Friday, May 28's Blkmarket Membership 4 year anniversary party took place in one of the Blkmarket boys' infamous "secret locations". The secret location turned out to be another colossal old Brooklyn warehouse with a disco ball the size of a small planet swaying from the rafters. It was the same warehouse that Reboot and Robert Dietz blew up a few months before...or so we thought. Being an avid techno disciple and a sucker for anything that sets my body in motion without premeditation, I am no stranger to the "secret", underground, warehouse party who's secrecy has just recently become about as covert as a hooker's sex life. Yes, the secret warehouse party is practically a weekly operation now in New York City, so inevitably the sparkle and newness have sort of worn off for the regulars. The childlike thrill is still ever present for the first-timers however, like a couple of Miami partiers that accompanied us hoping to experience the "real" NYC party scene, beyond the popular clubs and commercial music. The headliners for this party were DOP live, Onur Ozer, and the Italian stallion of techno, Marco Carola. Since a liquid breakfast was on the day's menu and we only made it for afterhours, we missed Ozer and DOP but caught Marco in all his glory. Carola is a superstar DJ because he doesn't waste any time building up garbage until he reaches the stuff people want to hear. His music is deep and full-bodied from the get go and wastes no time pulsing rhythm and bass through your bones. He could benefit from using some more funky build-ups or some more interesting bass lines to keep people on their toes and steer clear of the one-note techno beat, but there is no doubt that Carola is a master of his craft. We look forward to seeing him evolve with the times and continue to make people dance, one techno orphan at a time.
