Rotterdam based techno legend Speedy J returns with a brand new EP on his own Electric Deluxe imprint. Last year, Speedy kickstarted his label with the absolutely massive Red Shift / Bootes EP, and he now consolidates his venture's image with another brilliant release.
The Trails EP features no less than six tracks, of which four are remixes by Edit-Select. The original version is a fuzzy, midtempo groover with minimal elements, in which Speedy discovers the secrets of melodic techno. We haven't heard that much melodic stuff from the man, but as always (we're groupies, yeah) Speedy churns out an utterly massive cut. A real deep, emotive tune feat. an AWESOME break, loads of cool twists and a great build-up. not that we expected something different though... Speedy J's Bonus Beats Dub Tool is a completely different kettle of fish. This remix is a definite big room affair with ferociously pumping midtempo kicks and dubby fx that will blow any roof, anytime, anyplace, anywhere.
Now on to the remixes. The Edit-Select Tool 1 mix is a motherfucking massive rework -entirely without kicks- that focuses on nervous percussion and dope fx. Real intense, experimental and original stuff. Absolutely fantastic. The second Edit-Select Tool is a beatless rework of the Bonus Beats Dub Tool (are you still with us?), and follows the same production path as the first remix tool. Shit will drive you mad, but it's worth it. The Edit-Select Remix is a mean lean techno machine with slightly offbeat kicks drenched in deep bass and rough all-dominating effecting on the side. A wallshaker extraordinaire. The Edit Select Hooked mix packs an even nastier punch, slamming its way through a merciless techno groove filled with raw, thundering beats and apocalyptic synth whirls.
The Trails EP offers six incredibly stunning techno tunes from one of the biggest techno artist in the game. Ace tunes,a ce remixes, what more can you ask for? Highly intelligent music, no stuff for the masses, and an absolute recommendation to any techno freak.
