Santorini - Supersoul EP

imageEP Review -
Paul Bowen's Luna Records follows up material from Justin Drake, Matthias Tanzmann and Chris Lattner with the Supersoul EP from Santorini. Here's our verdict.

The Supersoul EP is 26 year old Italian producer Santorini's first full EP release on the Luna Records label. Unfortunately, we're not exactly blown away by it. The original version is not much more than a looped beat-driven rhythm with a few lame breaks and repetitive fx mixed in, which makes it a rather boring affair. There's just too little going on to keep one's attention, and after four minutes of listening to the same loop we decided to switch to the second track, Touch Me. Unfortunately, this one's similar in terms of sound and boredom. Again we find ourselves listening to an endless groove with a break here and there but again nothing surprising occurs. Although a bit more playful, this is just another very basic track that doesn't do it for us.

Bearweasel's Lazy Dub remix of Supersoul is a slow, warm mix decorated with dubby sounds and easy going rhythm patterns. This one's the most minimal of all, featuring a well balanced production and  a solid overall vibe. We've heard better stuff, but it's not half bad. Rouding up the package is a dub version of Touch Me, which sounds better than the original due to the fact that the emphasis lies on a powerful tech house rhythm here. Mr. Molotov closes the package with a tech housy dub blend with some nice organs and vocal samples. By far the best tune on this EP.

Overall speaking, the Supersoul EP is a weak release marked by dull and uninspired structures. The repetitive nature of each track and the lack of any excitement and quality whatsoever make the EP a sorry excuse of a tech house release. Sure, the last track's okay, but one out of five isn't really the thing we'd like to spend our money on. One to skip.
