Robert Hood - Alpha / The Family EP (M-Plant)

imageTechno -
Robert Hood kickstarts the 2011 chapter of his acclaimed M-Plant label with his own brand new The Family track, while James Ruskin pops up for a remix of Alpha.

Up first is Ruskin's remix of Alpha, a no-nonsense, stomping minimal Detroit techno tune jam packed with deep bass and swirling percussion. The trancey break is nothing too special, and the second half of the track is not much more than a slightly pimped up continuation of the first half. Nothing too much to get thrilled by here we're sorry to say.

Hood's The Family track is a typical Hood track with stabbing keys and a stripped-down rhythm as its basis. As the track proceeds, several layers of percussion and drums are added while the keys are slightly modulated throughout the track. The result is an extremely powerful Hood track that is as spartan as it is effective.

Our verdict:
Whereas Ruskin's remix lets a bit down, Robert Hood's own contribution is what makes this EP worth while. A nice pick for Detroit techno afficionado's, although we've heard better.
