Cloak & Dagger - Crimewaves / In The Cut

EP Review
The twentieth release on the Immerse label comes from the hands of Cloak & Dagger aka Evan Gach, a resident of Japan’s capital city Tokyo. An artist with a very broad taste in music, something his music definitely reflects…
This two-tracker starts off with Crimewaves, a broken/beat/garage/jazz fusion with silky soft piano touches and equally soft strings in the background. The tune perfectly translates the wild, hectic and diverse atmosphere of the metropolis he calls home. The biggest strengths of the tune is its very vivid middle-part, in which a variety of genres collide into an intriguing cacophony of sounds. A very interesting listening experience.
The second tune, In The Cut, is much moodier, flirting with the sinister sound that is dubstep. Dark basslines and sparkling synth sounds are merged into the complex drum rhythm that supports the tune, with the tune itself occasionally taking a few steps back to reveal an almost warm, subtle atmosphere.
Cloak & Dagger presents two highly enjoyable tunes full of references to other genres, although both are perfectly balanced and nowhere near approaching the dangers of overproduction. This makes this debut EP a very adventurous cut and another quality addition to the catalogue of this renowned label.
