EPM Presents Acroplane Podcast

It's that time of the month again. The guys at EPM are delivering another massive podcast. After Chris Finke, Vince Watson and Kone-R, it's Acroplane behind the deks for this month's edition.

Ireland’s Paul Acroplane digs deep into the box marked dark and twisted as he traverses electro, bass, dubstep, breaks, techno and electronica providing a sterling mash-up through some of the finest producers and labels around including: Jean Jacques Perrey & Cosmic Pocket, Skam’s VHS Head, Doctor Evil, Baconhead, Ed Chamberlain, Fran Hartnett, Enab.led, Brawdust, On/Off and more.

Paul Acroplane has been knocking about Ireland DJing at clubs, festivals and free parties for about 10 years, having played alongside artists as diverse as Autechre, Scorn, Si Begg, Clark, Boxcutter, Luke Vibert, DJ/Rupture, Surgeon, King Cannibal, Kevin Saunderson, Ebola, Yee-King, Remarc, Aaron Spectre and Bong-Ra, to name but a few. He was the main man behind Belfast’s now legendary Diston events, and now heads up the city’s Acroplane Bass Session shows in venues of all shapes and sizes.

Not content with that Paul started up Acroplane Recordings, a digital label hosting music from the likes of Boxcutter, Somatic Responses, Chevron, Mothboy, Mad EP, Ebola, Igorrr, Space Dimension Controller, Lackluster, wAgAwAgA, Red Box Recorder and Vertical67, among dozens of others. Acroplane Recordings has a diverse selection of sound on offer on the label, providing consistently high quality releases to rival any of what the big boy electronic labels can offer. Q&A with Acroplane
1. Please give us a quick walk through your selection. Why did you choose these tracks and artists for the mix?
Most of the tracks included are from labels or artists we know personally, and I tried to include a bit of an Irish influence in there: The labels Psychonavigation, Stasis and ourselves, plus Automatic Tasty’s Lunar Disko release. You can expect to see music from Automatic Tasty available to buy on Acroplane next year. We’ve released some free albums from him in the past.

2. How would you attempt to describe your DJ style and what you play? Words like ‘leftfield’ or ‘electronica’ just don’t seem to cover it.
I’m up for trying to string together any music I like really. Heavily Old-School Hip Hop, Rave and old IDM influences run pretty deep in the mixes I put out, I guess, and there’s always a bit of Dubstep and Techno recently. Modern electronic dance music with a nod to the past.

3. Tell us about the Diston parties you ran in Belfast. What were the most memorable nights?
We ran Diston events for a few years in venues all around Belfast, and sometimes setting soundsystems up at festivals too. They were pretty successful and something Belfast hadn’t seen before. Some guests we brought to town include Luke Vibert, Neil Landstrumm, Milanese, Clark, Bong-Ra, Mad EP, Mothboy, Schemeboy, Plaid, Decal, British Murder Boys, Pheek, Surgeon, Wrong Music, King Cannibal, Hellfish and Boxcutter, among many others.

My favourite nights were probably Surgeon @ The Art College, Belfast, Wrong Music @ The Catalyst Arts Centre, Belfast, and Clark and Milanese @ Laverys Bar, Belfast.

4. It appears that there are loads of up and coming electronic music producers in Ireland right now. Who, in your opinion, should we be looking out for?
I’ve been thoroughly enioying music by Anodyne, Automatic Tasty, Space Dimension Controller, Kab Driver, Ed Devane and Prince Kong.

5. How is your current night ‘Bass Session’ going?
Yeah, really well. We’ve currently got a really nice venue that hasn’t been used for parties like ours before which adds a bit of freshness to things in a city where it’s harder and harder to get a good venue. I’m mainly just putting on shows involving Acroplane artists at the moment, but we have plans for Monster X from Peace Off Records to play on October 8th.

6. The floor isn’t responding…what’s your ‘get out of jail’ record to get the party started?
At the minute, probably The Signal Path by Joey Beltram.

7. Who has been your favourite guest at the parties you have hosted over the past ten years?
Probably Surgeon. Always a solid booking, and Belfast parties kick off hard when he plays.

8. What’s your current favourite Belfast slang expression?
“Do one”, meaning go away. Actually, i’m not sure if it’s something only said in Belfast. It’s used a lot here though.

9. One of Belfast’s favourite sons, snooker player Alex ‘Hurricane’ Higgins recently passed away. What record would you have played at his funeral?
Anything by Masonna or Merzbow.

10. Please give us your top 5 ‘All Time Electronic Producers’
This changes all the time, but off the top of my head, in no particular order, Autechre, Underground Resistance, Arovane, Coil, Brian Eno.
