Umek - Responding To DynamicWritten by the B&B Crew Album reviewIt's been eight years since Umek's debut album Neuro, and although we have heard quite a few stunning EPs from the Slovenian techno DJ/producer over the past few months, we really were aching for a new longplayer. And here it is, Responding To Dynamic, released through his own Sixteenofive label. Umek's distinctive techno sound can be heard in abundance once more, as well as references to tech-house and tribal elements. Has it been worth the wait? Most definitely! Responding To Dynamic carries that unique Umek techno sound all over. Thundering, beefy techno to the fullest, with each track being covered in thick industrial vibes and a no-nonsense attitude . Each track are build around mechanic rhythms, with the sound of the album varying from lowdown dirty techno to tech house flavored compositions. Squeamish Sort marks a solid introduction in the form of a nasty groove that holds the middle between techno and tech house, while straight-forward techno monsters such as the title track, Slap, and Legitimate Priest are a punch in the face of trendy minimalists. Perhaps the biggest tracks, amongst many to be honest, is Individual Breath. This is one of those irresistible big room techno tracks, with a break that goes far beyond techno standards and a climax that delivers in a truly spectacular way. Freaking amazing. During the second half of the CD, we encounter mind crushing cuts such as the funky Uncouth Manners, the dark and doomy No One Could Have Suspected, and Sequence Of Shapes with its utterly nasty bassline. Tresor, anyone? Whereas 99% of all techno DJs tend to turn to minimal these days, Umek stays true to that uptempo oldschool techno vibe and delivers a daring and most brilliant album. The producer skillfully fuses his past with his future, resulting in a genre-bending release firmly rooted in that filthy retro techno vibe whilst reflecting the techno sound of 2010 as well. While this approach often turns out dramatically for those who try to hard out of desperate measures, Umek has managed to create equality and balance. One does not often come across an album of such brilliance as this one. We have an exclusive guest mix plus audio interview with Umek available soon! Watch this space for more info! Tracklist:1.
