Trance Energy Compilation 2010 Album ReviewThis year, the honor of mixing the Trance Energy album was passed on to Dutch DJ and producer Sander Van Doorn. He's made a name for himself amongst us trance-heads, but this release is sub-par. Considering the incredible array of talent and songs that Van Doorn had to work with, including sets from the world's number one DJ Armin Van Buuren, this mix had the chance to be epic. Instead, it falls far short of expectations. Having not been at the show itself, it's easy for me to say that the mix is weak. However, only a small handful of songs really stand out as legitimate, ground-breaking tracks that are deserving of the Trance Energy title. "Caffeine" from 7 Skies is a spectacular track, with echoing vocals, soaring synth and an excellent piano incorporation. "In Control" from Ronald Van Gelderen is another fine specimen. "Nightfall" by Jonas Stenberg Press. Sunstate saves the middle of the mix with its awesome build up and break down. It really is a beautiful song and brings us back to trance basics. Hearing from System F is a nice touch, as Ferry Corsten is one of the gods that has helped form electronica into what it is today. Sander Van Doorn's own track "Daisy" is also a big hit, and is well constructed and an excellent choice for the mix. The rest of the album feels like it belongs on some iTunes "Trance 100" compilation. Choosing "Escape Me" from Tiesto's most recent release is really a slap in the face. It's a popular song, but that's kind of the problem. Tiesto is a genius, a trance legend, but that song is painfully bad. Also, the selection of Van Doorn's "Renegade" as the Trance Energy anthem was simply a mistake. The song is forgettable at best, and that ultimately is a reasonable way to sum up this album as a whole. Rating: 7/10 Tracklist:
