Rusko - O.M.G.

imageAlbum Review
Rusko's debut album is called 'O.M.G.' the title also works as the average listener's reaction to the sounds and songs that make up this record. The first track on the record entitled 'Woo Boost' is also the first single. It was released in March, April saw the release of 'Hold On'.

Hold On features vocals by Amber Coffman of the band Dirty Projectors. The single was initially only available for sale via a site that is only accessible from the United States. I went mad trying to find a decent version of it, and before long the SubFocus remix was released.

Hold On is the second track on O.M.G. so at first listen I already had a clue of what my ears could expect. By the third track entitled 'Rubadub Shakedown' the scope of the album widens significantly. It grows to include rhythms and sounds reminiscent of reggae, jungle, and even gets a little close to house and disco in some places. This surprised me slightly as the album from someone with a reputation for playing and producing dubstep.

That truly is the beauty of this album, the ground it covers. It is so much more than another electronic dance record. It moves so far beyond a few singles and a few filler tracks. It is certainly a rarity for me to have such high expectations of an album and then upon it's release to have that record exceed my expectations by leaps and bounds. Then again, now that I think about it the chance I had to see Rusko live went down in a very similar fashion.

There was definite intrigue as to what he'd do with a Coachella crowd at 2:30 in the afternoon. The surprise is that despite the highest temperatures of the whole weekend during his set Rusko had that audience going insane. Perhaps he had more to do with the heat than I expect, but that's merely speculation. The simple fact is that by name and discography and reputation we expect good things from Rusko. The truth is that he humbly exceeds those expectations.

The music is unlike anything I've heard before. It's similar to so many things that I have loved throughout the years, and that's the beauty of O.M.G. It steps boldly forward and includes so much of the richness in music that has led to the electronic/dance/dubstep movement. All of that and it is brighter and lighter than predicted, don't get me wrong it's heavy. It simply is not dark like some predicted it would be.

A must hear, must listen, must repeat journey into dub. 8/10. I love it. Try it on for yourself, the vibe of O.M.G. is something I could never describe. Let it become part of the soundtrack to your summer.
