Martin Landsky - WerkschauWritten by the B&B Crew Album reviewThe mood of this album is one of Sturm und Drang. Thankfully, however, it's played by one of the best and he makes a strong case for his work here. Werkschau compiles the obvious hits, like the alpha and omega companions - "1000 Miles" and the 2010 remake "2000 Miles" – indulges his darker, techno psyche on "Personal Decay", and even offers up a few of his best remixes. The reason Landsky still remains relevant these days, despite the competitive environment, is captured on these 16 tracks. There is such care and dedication in the way this guy makes a bass line, like the kind in "1000 Miles", that it makes his music appear unhurried and laser focused. It's easy to forget that in the mid 2000's, after the death of trance, how refreshing it was to hear clean sounds and crisp production values like this, these days it is the norm. But way back when, guys like Landsky were defining the aesthetic and this collection celebrates that pioneer spirit. There is a fresh quality in his moody restlessness as producer. Even party cuts like the remix of Soopa-Fi's "Large" sound suicide-inducing yet timeless in comparison to this year's trendy deep house surge. But this musical version of teeth gnashing on record is what makes Landsky so consistent as a producer and keeps his sound evolving and current. Granted there is a whole lot of stormy weather with a musical tint that resembles varying shades of grey on Werkschau. This kind of monochromatic approach to production may not be for everyone but there is little doubt that Martin Landsky is a master of the discipline. This compilation offers insight in to why that is and attempts to unravel the riddle of what continues to keep him so popular. Tracklist: Rating: 8.5/10
