Lali Puna - Our Inventions

imageAlbum Review

With Our Inventions, Lali Puna have completed their fourth studio album since their debut Tridecoder in 1999.  Can the album withstand the fierce competition of todays vivid electronica scene? Let's put it to the test.

Contrary to what you might expect (if your not familiar with the outfit), the quartet hails from a small village near Munich Germany, not from Asia, and is known for their blend of laidback, ambient sounds and electropop, combining both acoustic and electronic instruments. From a rational perspective one could argue that for an album that took five years to complete, 38 minutes divided over 10 tracks is a bit meager; and at a first listen, you might call songs a bit formulaic if not similar. Simple but elegant and effective synths, soft, whispery vocals, and a minimal beat ticking along is the soothing recipe at work here; the album is finished before you notice.

Put rationality aside, and you will notice how well the album is made, how careful the vocals are underlined by the melodies and understated percussion. It feels effortless, yet sophiscticated; its not meant to impress, but floats along like a summery breeze. The result is timeless and coherent, minimalist but also unpretentious, unlike some of its electro-pop inspired contemporaries. Our Inventions, ironically is an album without any new inventions in particular. But, don’t be mistaken, it offers a consistent polished and balanced experience throughout. It is the ideal soundtrack for chilling out, or a perfect companion to work even after a few listens.
