Joachim Spieth Presents Selected 6

imageALbum Review -

Joachim Spieth’s Affin label spotlights its hottest 2010 releases in the form of Selected 6. Full review after the break.

Ever since his debut EP Abi 99 (released in the late nineties) and his contributions as co-founder of the Kompakt label, Joachim Spieth has carved his own niche in house and techno, He founded the Affin label in 2008, which has consistently been releasing tasty grooves from the likes of Dusty Kid, The Dolphins and Dirty Culture amongst others. This sixth edition in the Selected series serves some of the finest label Affin releases to date, once again presenting the many musical facets this label represents.

From the compilation’s extremely deep and funky opening track, Nil By Mouth’s Clavicle, the compilation continues to present a whirlwind of jacking house and rolling tech grooves that switch from being more stripped-down to straight-on nasty and guaranteed to make all the boys and girls in the club sweat. An example of one of those minimal-ish shuffles is Little Fritter’s tribal Googy Banter track, while tunes such as the hardcore stomping Entropy by Chemie (sounding like Timo Maas at war with Mr. Oizo), and Dirty Culture’s Contract deliver jam-packed house excitement. Along the way, the compilation manages to create a playful mash of many forms of house and techno, with the majority of the tunes being adventurous hybrids. Whereas these genres these days tend to be conceived solely from snippets and cut-up fx, this compilation also presents a handful of tunes that would do the job in any progressive house set. And perhaps that is the reason why compilation stands out from most similar mixes available today.

Our verdict
Selected 6 has become another superb addition to the Affin catalogue. The compilation as a whole oozes with diversity, delivering the hottest elements in house, minimal, techno, and even progressive across 17 exquisite tracks. A job well done.

Stand-out tracks:
Chemie – Entropy, BCR Boys – Raus and Tom Pooks & Laurent Pepper - Patuning
Weak moments:
Nothing worth mentioning
