Horse Meat Disco 2Written by Manu Ekanayake  Album Review - The Horse Meat Disco DJs are back with even more sonic gems for you, showing any doubters that their sublime disco session has the power to shake the very best dancefloors all over the world. Fiercer than the walk-off in Zoolander... If HMD Vol 1 was an attempt to showcase what a many-splintered thing 'disco' is (and at HMD you'll hear vintage Italo, underground electro gems and afro grooves too), then HMD Vol II is about showing you what it's like when the party's going right off at The Eagle – or indeed at Tape in Berlin, or Lux in Lisbon, or anywhere else that HMD's Jim Stanton, James Hillard, Severino and Luke Howard (aka Filthy Luka) hold court. The success of the HMD sound says a lot about the open-mindedness of the UK scene. In a time when bigger nights are struggling, a small club based in a South London gay venue is able to become a sensation. Why? Because they're reviving disco tunes that sound better than most of whatever's in the Buzz Chart, and playing them in a club which evokes the best of every clubber's 'Loft' party fantasies. HMD Vol II kicks off with the anthemic First Be A Woman by Leonore O'Malley... which pretty much sets the tone for everything that is to come. Unashamedly gay, operatic in its scope and with some seriously killer sax on the outro, this is exactly why Horse Meat appeals to gay and straight, young and old, clothed... and not so much. Other tracks that we have to mention are Night Time Boogie (present in a killer Horse Meat Disco Edit) You Can Get Over, the Zanzibar classic by Stephanie Mills with its startling strong vocal and finally the synth-laden, soaring funk number that is el Coco's Afrodesia.
