Gilles Peterson: WorldwideWritten by Manu Ekanayake Album Review - Gilles Peterson has been joining the dots between jazz and contemporary dance music for ten years on his Worldwide Radio 1 show. So this 2-CD compilation of tunes that he broke first is more than just timely, it's essential. If you don't like this, you don't like music, full stop.
If your conception of dance music begins and ends with Tiesto, then this release is really not for you. But if you like soulful dance music with a leftfield slant, then come on in, we've been expecting you. Gilles Peterson's been showcasing music like that his whole career, but this compilation concentrates on the ten years his Radio 1 Worldwide show has showcased possibly the broadest selection of sounds on any internationally syndicated radio show in the world. That's because as well as going out on the BBC, Gilles' show is also broadcast on a massive 17 other stations round the world (including J-Wave, the biggest commercial radio station in Japan). So it's safe to say that he knows what he's talking about, and with a list of tracks that runs the gauntlet from Jay Dee to Dizzy Rascal and Gotan Project to Seun Kuti and Fela's Egypt 80, it's hardly surprising that both quality and diversity are well represented here. This is the kind of release that gets you smiling as you listen to each track, from those that have gone on to massive acclaim like Sebastian Tellier's La Ritournelle or Dizzee Rascal's I Luv U, to more recent finds like Aidy's Girl Is A Computer Darkstarr, which was one of Gilles' Worldwide Winners earlier this year. Plus of course it's always good to be reminded of some other gems, like Dwele's Too Fly, or Dust by Recloose, both of which prove that soulful dance music doesn't have to involve some terrible diva going into one over a tired house beat. Nicely done, Mr Peterson.
