Ferry Corsten - Once Upon A NightWritten by Youri Jozee NewsWe believe we don’t have to introduce this man if you know a thing or two about electronic music, so we can keep it short on this one. After making a name for himself as an inventive trance producer, Ferry ‘System F’ Corsten went on to carve his very own niche as a daring experimentalist in the field where trance meets electro. This lead to a slew of cutting-edge tunes such as Phunk, Rock Your Body Rock and the rather exciting yet underestimated album Right Of Way (2005). Once Upon A Night is Ferry’s first mix compilation in two years and comes with no less than 25 tracks that have been produced exclusively for this release (of which most have been released on his own Flashover Recordings). Whereas we honestly expected this album to be a continuation of his electro sound, Ferry instead turns to trancier dimensions on this two-disc compilation. The first disc opens with punchy tunes on the brink of trance and progressive. Tunes such as the laidback Aroundyou by Yuri Kane, and the deep synth whirls on Fine Sky by Progressiver presents FineSky form a tasty ensemble of synth and strings, but it isn’t until the Ashley Wallbridge remix of Forgive Me, Forget You by Tritonal feat. Soto that we’re getting to hear punchier and more exciting material. Starting of as your regular trancer, the track evolves into a big room shaker during and after its massive breakdown. The energy level is sustained in the form of the simple but effective synth theme in Phynn’s Hello Love, and the semi-epic Ain’t She Pretty (Amurai’s Yerevan Remix) by Fender Woods, which has been decorated with a bunch of out-of-the-ordinary-yet-extremely-enjoyable-synth melodies. All in all, a decent first half so far. Now CD 2, that’s where the real value of this compilation is at. It is on this disc where we are being exposed to Ferry’s diversity across a total of 12 tracks. Mark Sixma opens the CD with a punchy little stinger, but we soon enough get to hear some nasty punch-packing hybrids. Slow Motion from megatalent Breakfast is among these gems. The guitar-ish melody’s brilliant, while the breakdown’s as epic as good trance ought to be. And then there’s the melancholic, somewhat dubby Hartseer by Bart Claessen, the manic energizer that is Something Wrong (by Anton Firtich presents aF Project), and Ferry Corsten’s own Once, on which he goes back to his Barber’s Adagio For Strings era. Overall speaking, Ferry delivers a decent trance compilation that will definitely finds its way to quality-craving trancers across the globe. The first disc lacks the element of excitement and originality, but CD 2 redeems the quality we’ve come to know Ferry for. And although we expected a little more diversity, we can’t say anything else that Once Upon A night is a solid delivery from a man who knows his game.
