Dessous Best Kept Secrets 2

imageAlbum Review
Sure, Steve Bug's Poker Flat's a fine source to turn to for all your minimal house needs, but Bug's Dessous imprint is just as much fun for deep house fanatics. In between releasing EPs, the label occasionaly reveals some of their 'best kept secrets' in the form of, here we go, the Best Kept Secret series.

The first edition in the Best Kept Secrets series (released in 2007) was one to cherish and play again and again and again and..., so when rumors that this one was in the pipeline emerged, well, we were excited to day the least. And we're not being disappointed here. Mr. Bug himself has signed for mixing duties again, and he shows off his impressive skills and choice of records right from the start. The first CD (yup, there's two) opens with the superfunky Juegos Fantasticos by David Durango, one of they key figures on the label. This killer tune, pushed forward by brilliant percussion and warm bass, immediately sets the tone for an adventurous trip through unexplored territories of the Dessous swamps. Tunes such as the suave, Detroit-influenced Le Groove Rhodes by Rene Breitbart, the sick sick sick Merise by Andrade (that got us all 'god DAYUM!'), and  the oldschool-ish thumper Just For This (Graeme Clark's Revenge Remix) only empower that vibe. In short, this first CD is an impressive overview of some of Dessous coolest cuts, and proof that Steve Bug knows his trade when it comes to jacking deep house.

But we're only halfway brothers and sisters! Disc 2 sees Steve himself taking place behind the mixer for a 15-track exploration of Dessous hidden gems. Any good? Aw hell yeah. The Bugmeister puts his groove boots on and treats us on a spectacular tour de force with tracks from Burnski, Moodymanc, Tigerskin and Claire Ripley among others. Rene Breitbarth's Afro house-inspired Detective gets us all in the mood, after which tunes such as At Midnight (Steve Bug's Always Late Mix) by The Discowboys (ft. a SICK groove), Dubba's Dub remix of Moodymanc's Snore (leaning towards techno but packing a fat house punch) and the melodic Utopia by Claire Ripley set things ablaze. Our pick? Langenberg's Alternate Rhythm. Jacking, funky house music at its very best. But with so many brilliance to choose from, that isn't exactly a fair question.

Dessous Best Kept Secrets 2 has the quality stamp all over it. This 2xCD incorporates everything any deep house freak can wish for, provided by one of the hottest labels in the genre. Just like its predecessor, this second instalment is a brilliant overview of Dessous' current sound, snazzed up by a series of unreleased jackers that do the damage in the clubs perfectly effective. Well worth every prenny.
