Longtime Dessous artist Vincenzo returns with a new album some nine years after his last one. Find out what we think of it after the jump..
Wherever I Lay My Head Down is composed of 13 tracks, and it’s surely to be called Vincenzo’s most diverse work till date. Whereas we’ve come to known the Berlin-based producer as a producer of (mainly) stripped-down house, this album reaches far beyond a single genre only, incorporating glistening disco synths, progressive textures, heavy electro beats and soulful house into the mix. The result is a very enjoyable album that perfectly merges basement grooves to progressive-style melodics, not rarely without a significant emotive touch.
After the beat-less Hello! with Lisa Shaw on vocals, the album swiftly continues with throbbing deep house with tracks such as the dark The Clearing and the more uplifting Keep Moving. After the electro-styled Wights & Measures, we get to the second half which is a bit less diverse as compared to the first. That’s nothing to worry about though, as Vincenzo drops the one well structured groove after the other. Take Where You Are for instance, a glowing hot slab of house perfect for mid-day beach partying, or the slightly odd-structured funk that is Calimero. Vincenzo delivers.
Our verdict: Wherever I Lay My Head sees Vincenzo turning more towards the sunnier side of house and techno as opposed to his earlier work. Disco-y melodies and sounds are put over both mid- as uptempo grooves, resulting into thirteen very catchy (and at times beautiful) tracks. Vincenzo doesn’t quite re-invent the wheel here, but it must be said that this album is a nice pick if you’re looking for some very well put together house music.
