NY producer Tony Rohr has been supplying us with percussive techno bombs for years, and now his long awaited second album will be out soon on Cari Lekebusch’ H Productions label. Full review below!
With releases on Plus 8 and Drumcode amongst others, Tony Rohr has established himself as a household name in the global techno scene since the early nineties. The Brooklyn based artist has developed himself into a multi-faceted artist whose sound is a pounding mixture of rolling tech house and stomping techno. Oddlantik Avenue is an overview of Rohr’s current musical vision which, as we’ll soon learn, is very diverse and dynamic. After the very experimental soundscape that is album opener I Come In Piece(s), Rohr serves up a palette of his trademarked electronic bombs, as always riddled with industrial effects, nervous bleeps and sinister background noises. After the tech-housy Meta Tripping, the album continues to serve up the one bomb after the other, with stand out tracks such as Dark Passenger, RZ-Fun and Oddmatik’s Theme delivering full on, snarling house and techno bombs. Perhaps the biggest strength of the album is the fact that all tracks are packed with unorthodox effects and even more surprising twists and turns, which is a rarity in today’s techno scene but a joy to listen to.
Our verdict: Oddmatik Avenue has become a dark, twisted but above all very well put together and utterly energetic album. If you’re looking for something refreshing and unconventional, this one would be a good pick.
Stand out tracks: Dark Passenger, RZ-Fun, Oddmatik’s Theme, Nightdrive (watch out for the bassline in this one!) Weak moments: None really.
