BnB Review: Systematic Colours Volume Three: Mixed By Phonique
Written by Youri Jozee
Deep House -
Berlin-based Phonique delivers a chunky deep house mixture of Systematic’s best releases of the past 24 months. Here’s how it sounds…
Phonique’s been in the deep house game for quite a few years now, and he’s been delivering some very decent releases and remixes for just as long. One of our most favorite releases from the man was released last year on Steve Bug’s Dessous imprint in the form of the Kissing strangers album, a wonderful display of utterly catchy deep house that’s still on heavy rotation at the BnB towers. Ealry October sees a new mix compilation by his hand on Marc Romboy’s Systematic label, and it has become another pretty juicy bone to all you deep house dogs out there, let me tell you that.
Across a total of fourteen tracks, Phonique delivers a playful blend of utterly heavy-on-the-bass house marked by vivid melodies and thumping kicks fabricated for peak time clubbing hours. After a very funky opening in the form of Marc Romboy & Blake Baxter’s Where Would You Be? (Version 2), the mix soon continues to serve up very credible depth charge bombs such as Chelonis R. Jones’s soulful Pompadour (Gorge Dub), the downright evil, bass-driven Vapor by Dachshund and the huge Joris Voorn remix of Marc Romboy vs. Stephan Bodzin’s Callisto, a very emotive, melody-driven track that’s definitely one of the mix’s highlights. The same goes for the follow-up track: the Fever mix of Robert Babicz’ Dark Flower, a track that just won’t seem to get old. This remix emphasizes the strong melodic power of the original while adding a very fresh blend of disco beats and progressive synths.
So, how about any weak tracks? Phonique isn’t the kind of DJ who would engage into cheap thrills, so let’s just say filler cuts are kept to a bare minimum… extra props for that,
Our verdict:
Phonique has always been one of those artists who won’t settle for less than pure quality stuff, and this mix proves it. Systematic Colours Volume Three has become the third high quality installment in the series, of which we’d like to see much more in the future.
