BnB Review: Strictly Dirty South

imageHouse -

Presenting the next in Strictly Rhythm’s classic cut-packing compilation series is Australia’s Dirty South. Here’s our judgment on his pick from the Strictly vaults…

Previous editions from Ramon Rapia, Radio Slave and Charles Webster all paid tribute to the rich collection of releases the label has spawned over the years, covering both classics as more recent releases in the form of energetic mixes with a slight vintage feel. Dirty South’s mix has become a bit more varied, as it blends classics from way back in the day with brand new cuts, plus a few unexpected twists here and there.

The first disc is a retrospective affair in which we find a lot of blasts from the past: Finally by Kings Of Leon, Bob Sinclar’s I Feel For You (Erick Morillo Edit), and the huge Kid Crème remix of Shakedown’s At Night are mixed smooth and swiftly into a dynamic mix catering to vintage house heads. One of the more remarkable tracks here is Âme’s Rej, a track that never seems to get old and works very well in this mix. Unfortunately, we can’t say the same about the extremely annoying La Mezcla (Roog Edit) by Michel Cleis feat. Totó La Momposina. Its magic has worn off for a long time now… All in all a very decent mix with plenty of white hot cuts.

Disc 2 provides an overview of current floorfillers that opens with Dirty South’s own (and rather weak) rework of Diddy Dirty Money’s Coming Home (feat. Skylar Grey). Things improve quickly though with quality cuts such as Ministers De La Funk’s Believe (feat. Jocelyn Brown) and Steve Angello’s hands-in-the-air remix of Tim Mason’s The Moment. On the overall the mixing’s solid, but the tracklist holds a few cheesy tracks to many, by which this mix ends up as a very average mix.

Our verdict:
Whereas Dirty’s selection of label classics on the first disc is a spot-on flow of grooves, the second half lets a bit down with a very unstable and at times downright boring tracklisting. An average compilation, this one.
