On his second album, the German producer further explores both the techier and deeper sides of house music… but for the good or the bad?
Don't be ashamed if his name doesn’t ring a bell immediately, but Niko Schwind certainly is no stranger to the game. The 31-year old producer has been rocking the decks at many prestigious clubs such as Berlin’s Club Der Visionaire and Watergate, and Brasil’s D-Edge amongst many others. Good Morning Midnight sums up Schwind’s musical passion, which ranges from soulful and deep vocal house to punchier and edgier techy tracks. And we’re not disappointed on this one. The gloomy Good Morning (feat. Fran) kicks off the album smoothly, while follow up tracks such as the rhythmic Shine and Playground Love add a bit more bass to the overall. Now perhaps the best thing about this album is that it manages to merge both commercially viable grooves to underground, typical Berlin vibes. Midnight is a good example of this. It contains the kind of groove we’re used to hear from labels such as Strictly Rhythm or Moon Harbour, while mixing it with warm basement ingredients. The best track? Midnight. But the drum-fuelled shuffler that is Wake Up (feat. Staller) is a close second.
Our verdict: Although the album could have used a bit more variety here and there, it must be said that as a whole, this release is a very well produced LP marked by a crisp clear production, lots of depth, and playful club weaponry.
Standout tracks: Playground Love, Midnight, Wake Up (feat. Staller) Weak moments: Don’t Turn The Lights On (feat. Channel X). It’s still pretty good though.
