BnB Review: Flowers And Sea Creatures - Flowers And Sea Creatures

imageCosmic/Cross-over -

Montreal based Flowers And Sea Creatures turn to Buzzin’ Fly to release their debut album, an unusual and very surprising mixture of hypnotic space rock and future disco. Here’s how that sounds…

To be honest, we’ve never heard of FASC before until news about their upcoming debut album reached us. Turns out we’re dealing with quite the outfit here. Co-production credits are shared between veteran producers Ewan Pearson, Fred Everything and The Revenge, which perfectly explains the diverse nature of this album. While the actual band itself is made up of vocalist/guitarist Graham Baxter and keyboardist Kosta Megalos.

So, ‘hypnotic space rock and future disco’ eh? Yup, it sounded like an eyebrow-raising combo to us at first too, but one should never judge a book by its cover, especially not in music. Their self-titled debut album has become a very colourful, dynamic and constantly surprising album full of ‘woah, I didn’t see that coming’ moments. The album opens with Kingdon Of Los Angeles, a beautiful laidback guitar-driven track that gets a little Radiohead-ish in the second half, after which Passengers and Ewan Pearson’s re-edit of A.M. take things to the dancefloor in the form of two dark, melodic, very well produced future disco tracks. And there’s lots more to enjoy on the album. The moody Sonic marks a rousing interlude before we get to the brilliant second half of the album, in which the acidy Junior Boys-tinged Electronique and the overwhelming, synth-drenched International stand out due to their amazing vibe and superb overall production.

Our verdict:

This is one of those debut albums you really can’t afford to skip. There’s a lot of cosmic stuff being produced these days, but it’s rarely of the same quality as the breathtaking music we hear on this album. Top marks for this one.
