BnB Review: FabricLive 57 - Jackmaster

imageHouse -

The 57th FabricLive compilation comes from Glaswegian DJ Jackmaster. And he's doing it the oldschool way!

Jackmaster. Now you may wonder who in the hell this fella is. We thought the exact same thing when we first heard about the news that he was going to be in charge of the 57th FabricLive compilation, but it turns out this guy’s actually one of Scotland’s house & techno tastemakers. Anyway, we’re pleased to meet him, as this guy’s sound got us hooked right away. Not that it’s anywhere near complex, innovative or eyebrow-raising, because it isn’t, but because ole’ Jack knows how to blow away his audience with the best classics (house, Detroit-techno, pure electro…) from back in the day. Hence his name. It’s not all just a trip down to memory lane though. In between the dusty 909 beats and hi-hatting, the home-grown DJ also serves up a fresh load of (live?) re-edits and other genres like UK Funky and dubstep too. Fuck being pretentious: This guy knows how to party, and this mix has the answers.

Spread across 29 tracks, Jackmaster presents some of the nastiest 80s and 90s classics as well as a handful of contemporary, more leftfield cuts. The amount of tracks squeezed in obviously has its influence on the length of each inclusion, but Jack’s quick and dirty mixing stylee guarantee a constant flow of energy and dynamics. Opening with pure back-in-the-day delight such as Inner City’s Big Fun and Model 500’s electro monster Night Drive (Thru Babylon) and the incredibly HUGE Kim English - Nite Life (Retail Club Mix), the mix immediately shoots off like a clown out of a circus cannon. Along the way, we get to hear some edgier stuff too such as Alldayallnight by Martyn and Addison Grooves’ Make Um Bounce. And it just keeps kicking like a god damn mule from there. Jackmaster’s mixing technique is comparable to the Detroit DJs: quick, a bit messy here and there, but always bumping and full of energy.

Our verdict:
FabricLive 57 might be miles away from being innovative, but that wasn’t the objective in the first place. Jackmaster digs deep into his collection of classics and newer material, and serves up a balanced and varied palette of cool cuts. That’s just basically what it all comes down to, no more, no less. Recommended? Hell yes!
