BnB Review: FabricLive 55 - DJ Marky

For the 55th instalment in its FabricLive series, the Fabric label turns to the Drum ‘n Bass genre with Brazilian-turned-Brit DJ Marky on deck duty…

In between supplying us with mixes jam-packed with the finest in house, techno and leftfield electronics, Fabric occasionally returns to the sound of drum ‘n bass, a sound typical to the UK. Mixing it up is DJ Marky, Innerground label head and one of the genre’s most promising faces whose DJ career spans over 25 years. His mix has become a hyper-energetic affair, a menacing trip through ferocious rhythm patterns and whirlwind synths from the very beginning. After a deceivingly laidback opener in the form of S.P.Y.’s By Your Side, the mix continues with storming tunes that shift from soulful (Die & Interface feat. William Cartwright's Bright Lights (Rollers Mix), to very melodic (Klute’s Will You Still Love Me?), and simply rough and punky (Heavy1’s Millers).

The mixing -of essential importance to drum ‘n bass, even more than to any other genre- is flawless and although there’s lots to enjoy in terms of smashing tunes, we can’t help but to feel that this edition in the Live series could have used a bit more originality or invention, as at some points during the mix things sound a bit too 90s for our tastes.

Our verdict:
Marky undoubtedly has what it takes to bring a club to its knees, his sound somehow sounds less convincing on disc. Overall speaking, FabricLive 55 has become a decent edition, but just ‘decent’ doesn’t cut it anymore these days.
