BnB Review: Fabric 57 - Agoria

imageHouse/Techno -

Following up on his recently released Impermanence album, Agoria now steps up to present the latest in the Fabric mix compilation series. Full analysis after the jump…

The French producer has made himself one of the global key figures in highly emotive house and techno with a myriad of EPs and the acclaimed albums Blossom, The Green Armchair, the soundtrack to the Go Fast movie, and his 2010 Balance mix amongst many others. In our February interview, Sebastian already hinted that his Fabric mix was going to be a very diverse affair: “[It] will be completely different than my Balance mix. It will be much more club-orientated because that’s obviously the aim of the series. There’s gonna be dub, acid, house, Detroit techno and a lot of surprises on it. Mixes like this enable me to blend various genres that normally wouldn’t match. “

Truth be told, Fabric 57 has indeed become a very dynamic piece of work in which throbbing (Detroit) techno, dub-infused cuts and sweaty deep house roughly form the basis. Agoria doesn’t shy away from implementing tracks by artists that may not ring everyone’s bell, which is something that always manages to attract our attention. The mix builds up beautifully with a slow-mo mash-up of Vainqueur - Ranges - Theme, Ensemble Economique - Real Things and Zodiac Free Arts Club - Ein Lied Für Popol Vuh, then moves to heavier material from Jerome Sydenham & Joe Clausell (the deep Rhythm) Canyon (the nasty jacking semi-techno track Blue Snake) and Eisbär (the very psychedelic Subspace Two). The mix continuously gradually moves into deeper and obscure territories as the mix proceeds, which leads to plenty of adventurous twists that slowly unfold the plot of the compilation as a whole. The second half of the release holds the most gems, such as Infiniti’s spacey Game One tune and the manic Cottam 4 by Cottam, one of the absolute highlights of this compilation.

Our verdict:
On this installment in the Fabric series, Agoria once more demonstrates his ability to merge various  genres into a continually evolving and shapeshifting trip through the deepest regions in house and techno. The mix carries Agoria’s trademarked sound: warm, a bit fuzzy here and there, very organic and at some points utterly intense, and drenched in Detroit-ish elements throughout its entire playtime. The result is another magnificent Fabric mix, and another highlight in Agoria’s discography.

Stand out tracks: Canyons – Blue Snake,  Eisbär – Subspace Two, Cottam – Cottam 4
