BnB Review: Fabric 56 - Derrick Carter

imageHouse -

The 56th edition in the renowned Fabric series comes from Chicago pioneer Derrick Carter, who presents a sweaty arsenal of 'boompty-boom' house tunes.

It's a bit odd that it took 55 editions before Derrick was asked for a contribution, but we're glad to see the man finally stepping up for his take on the series. Fabric 56 has become a mix of classic tracks, re-edits, and newer cuts from a wide range of artists. "“I was trying to get as close to a set as I could," says Derrick. "One that spans time and goes from maybe 10 years ago, to some stuff that’s not released, to some stuff that won’t be released other than on this album. That’s how a real set is for me, I have some new stuff, some old stuff, some special stuff. I tried to give it that kind of treatment so it’s authentic, and real and valid and present. It’s Derrick. All day.”

He couldn't have said it better. Fabric 56 is a continuous flow of extremely dynamic house grooves full of samples and unexpected twists and turns, coated in the form of 17 outstanding tracks. From Almost September's super funky Love (Derrick's BHQ Remix, aka his housy rework of the hiphop original) onwards, the mix excels in delivering bumpity boombap beats laden with bass and drums and rock solid club detroying fx. Take Nick Garcia's Playin' Tricks (Hector Moralez Remix) for instance, an incredibly solid house/techno groove with super catchy melodics and vocals, or the suh-mooooooth Osunlade pres. Nadirah Shakoor - Pride (Johnny D Remix). Derrick never slows down, but instead keeps on dropping the one hot tune after the other. The result is an incredibly uplifting, hyper-energetic and very original house explosion that may very well be among the most exciting mix compilations in its genre this season, and possibly this year.

Our verdict:
If you're a sucker for authentic house music, you can't afford to miss out on this one, it's as simple as that. Fabric 56 is an extremely well put together mix without any weak moments, brought to us by one of the leading names in the field. Downright f*cking awesome.
