BnB Review: Darkness Falls - Alive In Us

imageIndie/Pop -

After a very pleasant first encounter with the Trentemöller-producer band last March, Darkness Falls now present their first full length. Get ready for a mystifying mash of indie and dark poppy singer-songwriter tracks…

Darkness Falls are Josephine Philip and Ina Lindgreen, two Danish rock chicks from Copenhagen. Their debut EP caused a buzz among fans of bittersweet indie last March, as it merged tingling pop textures to 60s guitars and spacey electronica sub-layers, co-produced by super producer Trentemöller. Alive In Us has first and foremost become a harmonious mix of aforementioned elements, while also having become an study into the dynamics of haunting pop melancholia in general.

After the 15-second noisy Intro, the album serves up tracks that sound like a female version of MGMT on valium, 60s pop, and glistening, at times shoegaze-fueled indie. Noise On The Line, the second track, is a downtempo piece of dream-pop, while The Void turns the speed up a nudge with haunting guitars and danceable drums. It’s pop with a twist, a definition that applies to every single track on the album. Tracks such as Alive In Us and Paradise Technology II rely more on thick synth layers, while album highlight Timeline flirts with 80s, Depeche Mode-style synth pop. This all might sound like this is an contrasting album, but the band manages to sound credible at all times as each track sounds unfathomably mysterious, psychedelic, and very original.

Our verdict:
Darkness Falls’ debut album is recommended to fans of obscure pop with references to the rock sound of the 60s and early 70. It’s not an eacy album, but a fewspins will undoubtedly get you hooked to the top-of-the-bill production techniques and eerie themes this album reflects. If you can’t stop playing Trentemöller’s amazing mix for Late Night Tales, then this one is bound to grace your collection too.
