BnB Review: Cocoon Compilation K
Written by Youri Jozee
House/Techno -
The latest in Cocoon’s annual compilation series once again showcases the label’s view on contemporary house and techno. But is it worth your dough? Read below…
Sven Väth’s Cocoon emporium keeps on dropping the one compilation after the other, and much like Armin van Buuren’s Armada platform, half’s shit and the other half’s ace. Anyway, the Compilation series do belong to the latter category, as they continue to push the envelope with some of the finest house, techno, and disco-tinged cuts out there. In that sense, Compilation K lets a bit down. It certainly has its moment, but it could have been much better in terms of originality.
Up first on this comp is 20-year old Berliner David August, whose True Romance is a slow-paced space disco track with the glowing synths, wobbly fx and a nice swampy groove to it. After Nina Kraviz weak W-Blue, we continue with both dope cuts such as Dinky’s slamming Luvin, a very sexy track for the floors, and Maetrik’s proggy houser Caught Between. However, tunes such as Christian Burkhardt & Einzelkind’s Icon and Sascha Dive’s New Frontiers are less satisfying. Argy’s The Thrust, an extremely energetic and hypnotizing track, is by far the biggest track on here, although closing track Blesses by Minilogue is definitely worth the a spin too.
Our verdict:
Cocoon has established itself as a number one source for the cooler cuts in house and techno, but this compilation doesn’t reflect that. Although it holds a couple of bombs, it also contains tracks that, in our opinion, seem to completely miss the point. All in all a good-but-not-great release.
