The Bloody Beetroots have gone from club faces to electo-rocking remixers par excellence, as this collection of their work with the likes of the Chems, Vitalic and Tiga illustrates.
The Bloody Beetroots are Italians-turned-Londoners Bob Rifo (aka Sir Bob Cornelius Rifo) and DJ Tommy Tea (aka Isaac), whom we first came across at Together indie-electro Friday nights at Turnmills (RIP).
Usually with music like this, anyone over the age of 25 is left by the wayside, but this collection of their remixes – as well as the collection of people who’ve chosen to work with them – show that the Beetroot boys have got some real skill. It’s obviously not going to appeal to the deep house beards out there, but to be frank most clubbers came from some kind of rock background, which is well-catered to here.
A good example of that rocky inflection is their remix of Pistol & Hearts by Captain Phoenix, which links some truly nuclear guitar to a searing bassline, all for some very Justice-like good times. And Stomp Your Shoes (originally by The Aston Shuffle feat. Tommie Sunshine) is the kind of thing a rockier Daft Punk could have produced early on.
But those looking for a heavier sound will like U-God’s appearance on Stomp The Roach, as the Wu-Tang man’s vocals meld into a nice slice of dancefloor hip-house, which might be a little heavy on the reverb, but is pretty good apart from that. Tiga’s music is made for this kind of treatment anyway, which is why it works so well on Mind Dimension, with its bit-music vocals and throbbing synths. And Can’t Stop Me Now showcases the trancier side of the electro-house coin, with the big breakdowns and soaring bass you’d expect to hear from many of the genre’s bigger names, now they’re playing different kinds of music. Music like this, in fact.
Our Verdict Worth a try – it got our jaded hearts racing on a Monday when there seemed to be very little right with the world, plus it’s a good collection of the different styles that encompass modern electro-house. Not one for the genre-nazis, but if you’re able to admit that guitars can be fun too (or you’re looking for a present for someone who likes them, plus a nice fat bassline) then this could be just the thing.
Stand out tracks: Tiga’s Mind Dimension and Etienne De Crecy’s (Bloody Beetroots remixes, obviously) Weak moments: Some seriously poor rapping from Robyn on Cobrastyle. Not the Beetroots fault, mind.
