BnB Review: 1Trax 'Two'- Mixed By Subb-An

House - Following up Matt Tolfrey’s One compilation, London’s 1Trax label is set to deliver the second installment in the series, this time mixed by up and coming house DJ/producer Subb-An. Full review after the jump.
Over the past few years, Ashique ‘Subb-An’ Subhan has been delivering the goods on labels such as 20:20 Vision, Mothership, Tsuba and his own One Records amongst others, while cuts for Culprit, Crosstown Rebels and Spectral are in the pipeline. Up next on his release roster is this mix for 1Trax that reflects Subb-An’s passion for swampy and chunky house music in its most authentic form.
After a bold kick-off in the form of the stomping, oldschool/acidy Lime & Pink by Wadsworth, Subb-An soon moves to New York and Chicago house heights with tunes such as Kevin Griffiths’ Lucky Three and Dzeta n’ Basile & Dodha’s highly exciting Horaria. Things get turned up a nudge on Subb-An’s own hard hitting remix of Shenoda’s Cut, a fierce house mover fueled by fat kicks, subtle bass pulses and shimmering tones, after which we briefly return to the very depths of house music on the deep housey The Lovers Night by Subb-An himself. Javier Caballo’s warm and powerful Glass and Mary Jane Coles’ Get Away (here in the very hypnotic Subb-An remix) mark an excellent closure of an excellent compilation.
Our verdict:
Merging deep and often dubby house to jacking, at times oldschool shufflers, Subb-An has dropped a tight and very enjoyable mix armed with a serious load of dancefloor detonators. The mix as a whole seems to reflect the sound of a packed basement venue at around 3:00 am, with sweaty bodies, smoke machines and warm lights as its main ingredients. Don’t expect anything innovating or experimental here. Subb-An’s ‘Two’ is just pure, filthy house music and definitely worth checking if you’re a fan of the genre.
